The importance of having adequate insurance for your mobility equipment or car mods

Mobility equipment can be so expensive. It can take so long to either save to self fund it, or take long wait times to be approved from the NDIS to even get it. And even then, they are pretty strict and usually only approve a big ticket item like that once every 5 years.

Can you imagine if something happened and it got damaged or stolen. It wouldn’t be so easy to replace for a lot of people... Who has an endless supply of cash?…. I know I don’t!

Did you know you can get insurance for mobility equipment, and also for car modifications?

For mobility equipment, the NDIS usually do not allow premiums to be claimed from your funding unless you have it specifically approved in your plan. This is something you must ask for in the plan review stage, but it is probably pretty rare for them to agree to fund it.

For car modifications, that portion of premium can be claimed from your NDIS funding. Only that portion though, they will not fund for your regular car insurance as that is an everyday expense that anyone would usually have to pay.

I recently had a boot lift installed for my scooter. I went through Blue Badge Insurance to get cover for it. Their invoice comes with a complete breakdown of costs which makes it so much easier to claim. The process was really easy, all dealt with over the phone. I was reimbursed from my plan manager really quickly as well.

I already had my new scooter insured with Blue Badge Insurance. The policy comes with public liability, so if I accidentally damaged persons or property, I am insured. I think that is really important to have because accidents can easily happen, especially with power chairs, they can really cause some damage.

It is also worth noting that some people have commented on other threads that their content’s or car insurance should cover it. I would highly suggest contacting your insurer and get confirmation because you can’t afford to be stuck without any cover.
